Max Beer (1864 - 1943) was an Austrian-German Marxist historian - a Jewish journalist and historian of British and international socialism.
He emigrated to Germany in 1889, where he became the editor of the Magdeburger Volksstimme and, after eight months, was arrested, charged with inciting to class struggle, and of insulting the German army and authorities, convicted and sentenced to ten months of imprisonment.
In 1894 Beer moved to England and studied at the London School of Economics 1895-1896. In December, 1897, he left for Paris, where he covered the Dreyfuss affair. From there he moved to New York, where he spent the crucial years 1898-1902 (the time of the Spanish-American War and of the Filipino Rebellion) and witnessed the birth of American imperialism, which he analyzed for Die Neue Zeit and Vorwärts, the main journals of the German Social Democratic Party.
Between 1929 and 1933, Beer was active in the German Communist Party where he lived and worked in Frankfurt am Main. When the Nazis took power in Germany in 1933, Beer fled to London where he later died.
