In 1969 Kollo sang at the Bayreuther Festspielenden ( Flying Dutchman). 1970 he made his debut at the Milano Scala, 1973 he san in Bayreuth again. 1976 Rene Kollo sang the Lohengrin in the Karajan-Production at the Salzburger Osterfestspiele and had his debut un the Walkure at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.
Ariadne auf Naxos an der Metropolitan Opera New York (1979) followed, Parsifal in San Francisco (1984), Parsifal in his own production in Darmstadt (1986), Tiefland in Ulm (1991) and Tannhauser at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (1992). 1996 he became director of the Berlin Metropol Theaters.
