b/w vintage postcard from Oberpullendorf, signed by Cardinal Theodor Innitzer and Wilhelm Miklas in 1935. The Autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Stamp removed otherwise fine condition. Theodor Cardinal Innitzer (1875 -1955) was Archbishop of Vienna and a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. Innitzer's role in early 20th century Austrian history remains disputed, because of his involvement in politics. This assessment stems from his cooperation with the Austro-fascist government of Engelbert Dollfuss and Kurt Schuschnigg from 1934 to 1938, which based many of its economic and social policies on the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. He and the other Austrian bishops signed a declaration endorsing the Anschluss, set up by Gauleiter Buerckel, and signed by Innitzer with "Heil Hitler!". Wilhelm Miklas ( 1872 -1956 ) was an Austrian politician who served as the third President of Austria from 1928 until its annexation by Nazi Germany in the Anschluss 1938. Miklas originally offered amnesty to jailed Nazi members, but refused to turn over the national police force to Arthur Seyss-Inquart, though after Hitler ordered military operations along the border, Miklas was forced to concede to their demands and installed Seyss-Inquart as the Austrian Minister of the Interior. Miklas was highly unpopular among Austrian Nazis because he refused to commute the death sentences imposed on assassins of Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss after the failed putsch in 1934.
