Vaclav Havel, born 1936 in Prague was always very close to the intellectual and artist community in Czechoslovakia.

As an outcome of the Second World War Czechoslovakia fell under Soviet Russian and Communist domination in 1948 with serious effects on Havel’s family. Vaclav Havel worked as a laboratory technician and took night classes to finish high school. As he grew into manhood he showed signs of dissent against the Czech Communist authorities’ ongoing suppression of artistic and literary freedoms.

Havel was somewhat involved in the Prague Spring of 1968, an episode where Czech intellectuals enthusiastically supported moves, then being sponsored by Alexander Dubcek, for a liberalizing reform of the Czech Communist system.

A Soviet invasion of August 1968 suppressed the Prague Spring. Havel protested with the result that the authorities banned his works. The authorities offered him several opportunities to leave the country but he declined as he had decided to remain in Czechoslovakia and work for change holding the view that ‘the solution of this human situation does not lie in leaving it.’

In 1977 he helped orchestrate and produce Charter 77, a document supported by hundreds of Czech intellectuals, that demanding that Czech citizens be afforded basic human rights such as had seemed to be promised in the Helsinki Agreements…….

Regarded as one of the greatest actresses in Hollywood history, she was noted for her willingness to play unsympathetic, sardonic characters and was reputed for her performances in a range of film genres, from contemporary crime melodramas to historical and period films and occasional comedies, although her greatest successes were her roles in romantic dramas.

The trio began their collaboration with a performance at the ancient Baths of Caracalla, Rome Italy, on July 7, 1990 ¨C the eve of the 1990 FIFA World Cup final.

Frederick William Victor Augustus Ernest (German: Friedrich Wilhelm Victor August Ernst) (1882 –1951) of the House of Hohenzollern was the last Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire. He was colloquially known as William or Wilhelm throughout Europe.

The photo is 10,5 x 14,6 cm and in good condition, the letter has horizontal and vertical folds, the original cover has condition problems.

Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev (Michail Sergejewitsch Gorbatschow ) is a former Soviet statesman, having served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991, and as the last head of state of the USSR, having served from 1988 until its collapse in 1991.

He was the only Soviet leader to have been born after the October Revolution of 1917. In 1989, he became the first Soviet leader to visit China since the Sino-Soviet split in the 1960s.

Gorbachev’s attempts at reform as well as summit conferences with United States President Ronald Reagan and his reorientation of Soviet strategic aims contributed to the end of the Cold War, ended the political supremacy of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), and led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990.

Legendary Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi: Authentic autograph on self made card. Hand signed in 1952.

Paavo Johannes Nurmi (1897 – 1973) was a Finnish runner. Born in Turku, he was known as one of the “Flying Finns”; a term given to him, Hannes Kolehmainen, Ville Ritola and others for their distinction in running.

During the 1920s, Nurmi was the best middle and long distance runner in the world, setting world records at distances between 1500 m and 20 km.

Nurmi won a total of nine gold and three silver medals in the 12 events in which he competed at the Olympic Games from 1920 to 1928. In 1932, Nurmi was unable to compete at the Olympics, as he had received money for his running and was thus considered a professional.
