Lancaster starred in a host of successful Westerns, war films and melodramas. Some are: "From Here to Eternity" (1953),"The Rainmaker" (1956), "Sweet Smell of Success" (1957), in Sinclair Lewis' "Elmer Gantry" (1960), which earned him the best actor Oscar or as an Italian aristocrat in Visconti's "The Leopard" (1963).
In the 60s and 70s: "Seven Days in May" (1964), "The Swimmer" (1968), "Go Tell the Spartans" (1978), "Airport" (1970) and "Twilight's Last Gleaming" (1978).
Lancaster made a graceful transition to senior roles, notably in Bertolucci's "1900" (1976), "Local Hero" (1983) and "Atlantic City" (1980) - which brought him his fourth Oscar nomination as well as the New York Film Critics' Best Actor award.
