Desireable, most attractive seal. Chickenblood-stone (鸡血石) with much red at all sides. Carved by the famous seal carver Zhao Zhiqian.

Zhao Zhiqian 赵之谦 (1829–1884) was a renowned Chinese calligrapher, seal carver and painter in the late Qing Dynasty, “the leading scholar-artist of his day.”

Zhao’s seal carving had profound influence on the later masters, such as Wu Changshuo and Qi Baishi.

Otto Muehl ( 1925 – 2013) was an Austrian artist, who was known as one of the co-founders as well as a main participant of Viennese Actionism and for founding the Friedrichshof Commune.

In 1943, Muehl had to serve in the German Wehrmacht. There he registered for officer training. He was promoted to lieutenant and in 1944 he took part on infantry battles in the course of the Ardennes Offensive.

After the war, he studied teaching German and History, and Pedagogy of Art at the Wiener Akademie der bildenden Kuenste.

In 1972 he founded the Friedrichshof Commune, which has been viewed by some as an authoritarian sect, and that existed for several years before falling apart in the 1990s. In 1991, Muehl was convicted of sexual offences with minors and drugs offences and sentenced to 7 years imprisonment. He was released in 1997, after serving six and a half years, and set up a smaller commune in Portugal. After his release, he also published his memoirs from the prison (Aus dem Gefaengnis).

Markus Prachensky (1932 -2011) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist of the Informalism.

In 1956 Prachensky, along with Wolfgang Hollegha, Josef Mikl and Arnulf Rainer, founded the artist association „Galerie naechst St. Stephan“.

In 1957 this group had an important exhibition at the Wiener Secession and Prachensky beacme member of the Secession. From 1983 till his retirement in 2000 he held a post as professor at the Akademie der Bildenden Kuenste Wien. Prachensky is considered as one of the most important artist of the Austrian Avantgarde and of the Informalism in Austria.

Antique Chinese seal made of stone. It is either from 1914 or 1854. Delicately carved Fu-Lion at topof the seal and artistically carved actual seal, carved by the artist Wu Zhi: „ Zhen Zi Xiao Wu” ( in the meaning of: The real Self is of no importance” ).

At the left side of the seal is a carving by the artist, stating date, receiver and name of the seal-carver.

Old Chinese leisure seal, brown-beige-grey stone, engraved by the artist (painter, calligrapher, seal-carver) 赵鹤琴 Zhao Heqin (1894 – 1971). As actual seal engraved are the characters: 长留天地间 chang liu tian-di jian (stay long between heaven and earth [means: to live long]).

Side engraving with details and signature.

Delicate, antique Chinese painting, depicting 100 sparrows in prunus, bamboo, and flowers. Qing Dynasty.

Signed and with seal by Wang Wu (王武), but painted much later in 18-19th century.

Long scroll: 17 1/4″ x 133″ (338 x 44 cm is the actual painting but broader and longer with margins).

Some 50-60 years ago the scroll has been professionally remounted and space has been added before and after the painting to leave space for calligraphy in case one wants to add some.
